Great News!

I meant to post this before our trip, but things always get crazy when we are getting ready to leave.

On the 19th, Evie had her appointment with the allergist for allergy testing. She tested negative for everything - even peanuts! The strange part is that the doctor recommended that we start feeding Evie some peanuts/peanut butter so she wouldn't develop a sensitivity later on. Peanuts have been totally banished from our house, so this is kind of a weird thought for me. Anyway, I just wanted to share the good news!

We are still in California, and come home this weekend. Look out for a trip report soon!

A Crazy Rollercoaster

That is a pretty accurate description of today.

A little over a week ago, I was at Beth's house, when we saw Mitsy (Beth's outdoor cat) on the back porch with another cat, who had a hurt paw. Beth took in the hurt cat, and he stayed in her bathroom for a few days, and she took him to the vet for his paw. He was such a sweetheart, that I wanted to take him in if he didn't have an owner. I was calling around about the standard protocol for what to do when you find a cat, and I was told we were supposed to take him to the shelter, and they would hold him for three days to give an owner a chance to claim him, and then he would be available for adoption after that if he had not been claimed.

Today was the day he became available for adoption, and no one had claimed him, so we headed down to the shelter this morning and adopted him, and named him Simon.

Nora wanted to carry the cat carrier on the way into the shelter

She was very excited to go get Simon
We took Simon home with us, and set up the downstairs bathroom for him with everything he needs to keep him away from Sadie until he was cleared by the vet to be around her. I took Simon to the vet in the afternoon to get his blood work and shots. Unfortunately we got some bad news - Simon tested positive for the feline leukemia virus. The vet said that Simon has about a 70% chance of having his immune system being able to get rid of the virus and test negative at a future date, and about a 30% chance that it won't go away, and that he'll eventually die from it. It attacks the immune system, and makes the cat more susceptible to some types of cancers. It is not dangerous to humans.

The next step is to get him retested at the beginning of June, and hope for a negative test at that time. If that one is positive, then they will wait a couple of months and test him again. If he tests positive that time, he is considered to have a persistent case that will not go away. There is also the possibility of getting a false positive on a test. The odds are in his favor, so we will keep him and Sadie carefully separated, and take the best care of him that we can, and then just hope and pray for the best.

These are some pictures I took of him tonight

He loves his scratching post

He has a very sweet disposition, and loves attention

He is also very, very curious!

Here are a few pictures of our other sweet furbaby, Sadie. She was not so cooperative around the camera.

New Camera!

I just got a new camera a few days ago - it's a used Canon Rebel XTi. I decided to finally jump into the crazy world of SLRs and try to get better at photography. Beth has been really awesome with helping me learn the basics. Here are a few pictures that I have taken so far while I've been practicing. I still have a lot to learn, but it is really fun!

These were from Sunday dinner at my parents' house. As you can see, Nora spent most of the evening in a Tinkerbell costume.

The "baby squat"

I tried some outdoor shots today while the girls and I were playing outside

I love Nora's crazy hair! Hehe.

I really like the continuous drive mode. It is very helpful when taking pictures of little kids, and bees...
